Schieffer, Winter headline region's university commencements

CBS News anchor Bob Schieffer will speak at the University of Mississippi commencement and former Gov. William Winter will address Mississippi State graduates in May ceremonies.
Schieffer, a Texas native, will speak at 9 a.m. May 9 in The Grove on the Oxford campus.
Winter, governor from 1979 to 1983, will speak at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. May 2 in Humphrey Coliseum on the Starkville campus.
Schieffer has been with CBS News since 1969 and moderator of the Sunday public affairs show “Face the Nation” since 1991.
He twice moderated presidential debates between Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain.
Since his one term as governor, Winter has advocated across the country for education reform and most recently lent his name and support to the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation at the University of Mississippi, his alma mater.
Commencements at the state’s public universities begin May 1 at MSU’s Meridian campus and run through May 22 at University Medical Center.

- Alcorn State – 8:30 a.m. May 9, Spinks Stadium, Dr. Charlie H. Bridges, a urologist and 1975 alumnus.
- Delta State – 10 a.m. May 9, Sillers Coliseum, Aubrey Patterson of Tupelo, banker and trustee for the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning.
- Jackson State – undergrad degrees, 8 a.m. May 9, Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, CBS News correspondent Randall Pinkston, a Yazoo City native; graduate degrees, 6 p.m. May 8, Williams Athletics and Assembly Center, Hattiesburg Mayor Dr. Johnny Dupree.
- MSU Meridian – 11 a.m. May 1, Riley Center, Joel Clements, chairman/CEO of First State Bank in Waynesboro.
- Mississippi University for Women – May 9, Rent Auditorium, 10 a.m. for College of Arts/Sciences, Education/Human Sciences, 1:30 p.m. for College of Business/Legal Studies, Nursing/Speech-Language Pathology and Culinary Arts.
- Mississippi Valley State – 10 a.m. May 9, Harrison HPER Complex, state Rep. Percy W. Watson of Hattiesburg.
- Medical Center – 10 a.m. May 22, Mississippi Coliseum, no speaker announced yet.
n Southern Mississippi – May 8, Green Coliseum, 10 a.m. for College of Business, Education/Psychology, Science/Technology, 3 p.m. for College of Arts/Letters, Health, William R. Phalen, CEO and chairman of West Publishing Co.
- USM Gulf Coast – 10 a.m. May 9, Coast Coliseum, Maj. Gen. Paul F. Capasso.
