TUPELO – Don’t bother showing up for free school supplies Saturday if you didn’t preregister for the United Way’s Back 2 School Resource Fair.
The United Way of Northeast Mississippi has 4,008 kindergarten through sixth-grade students registered. The group has enough supplies to cover only those kids, according to Melinda Tidwell, United Way’s executive director.
“It would have been great if we would have collected enough for another 1,000, but we didn’t collect that much,” she said.
The fair is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday inside the BancorpSouth Arena. Attendees can use either parking lot, but only the doors by the box office will be open.
Parents or guardians must accompany students. Everyone must sign in at the entrance to get their tickets for backpacks, haircuts and health screenings, if they registered for those.
“There will be lines,” Tidwell said. “Be patient.”
Haircuts and health screenings will be offered on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The backpacks are stocked with donated supplies – pencils, paper, binders, glue sticks, folders, erasers and crayons.
“We know that it may not be everything that the teacher wants for the child, but maybe it will help,” Tidwell said.
More than 30 groups will provide information, services or children’s activities for participants at the fair.
