TUPELO – Students have about a week left to register for free school supplies before the United Way giveaway is full.
As of Friday afternoon, about 3,500 students were preregistered. About 200 are being registered daily online or on the phone. The giveaway will be capped at 4,000.
To help fill backpacks for those students in need, the United Way of Northeast Mississippi on Friday had its largest supply collection of the summer. A dropoff was held in Fairpark, and Melinda Tidwell, the group’s executive director, said several business dropped off school supplies and checks.
“We had two vanloads of stuff,” she said.
United Way and its volunteers will continue collections today and July 23 at both Kroger and Walmart locations in Tupelo.
The group will kick off its fundraising campaign this year with a Back 2 School Resource Fair on July 30. The organization hopes to have enough school supplies, backpacks, socks and other materials for 4,000 students.
Right now, the group only is registering students for school supplies. Other services – immunizations, haircuts, vision screenings and hearing screenings – are solidly booked.
