JACKSON — Hinds County school officials have posted a request seeking bus drivers on the district’s Web site, an offer that includes free drug testing.
Madison County educators huddled with the governor’s office, seeking an answer on whether emergency personnel could be used to drive buses.
Both school districts, as well as those in West Point and Yazoo County, are caught in the middle of union negotiations between bus drivers and First Student, the Ohio-based bus company that holds the transportation contract with those areas.
Bus drivers are seeking a pay raise as well as other benefits.
Willie Smith, president of Teamsters Local 891, which represents about 400 bus drivers, tells The Clarion-Ledger the union’s legal team will decide what the next move will be by Tuesday afternoon.
