Screening of 'Ghostbusters' kicks off new film series at Tupelo’s Link Centre

“He slimed me.”
“I am the Gatekeeper. Are you the Keymaster?”
“It’s the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.”
“We came, we saw, we kicked its …”
The famous lines from “Ghostbusters” are the stars of the show at the upcoming quote-along screening of the 1984 comedy classic at the Link Centre.
“Most theaters discourage you from talking during a film; we’re actually encouraging it,” said Derek Russell, the Link Centre’s director of operations. “Popular quotes from the film will be displayed on screen so you can talk during the movie. It all depends on audience participation.”
There’s plenty of extra fun planned for the “Ghostbusters” screening.
A replica of the Ghostbusters’ car, the Ecto-1, will be on display all day outside the Link Centre the day of the screening.
In addition to popcorn and sodas, the “Ghostbusters”-inspired Hi-C Ecto Cooler will be for sale.
The quote-along is a first of its kind for the area.
“We wanted to give the casual movie-goer a new experience,” Russell said. “It’s not necessarily a new idea, but it’s new to North Mississippi.”
But wait – there’s more
The “Ghostbusters” quote-along is the first in a new film series, Words with Films, at the Link Centre.
The plan is to alternate quote-alongs with live script readings every month.
On Nov. 9, Greg Pirkle, Terry Smith, Morgan Ricks, Carlton Wall, Kenny Cook, Tom Booth and several others will read the script of the classic “The Princess Bride.”
“The audience will watch as actors from the community act out the entire script of ‘The Princess Bride’ in a seated reading,” Russell said.
The series continues in December with a quote-along of “Christmas Vacation,” complete with a tacky holiday sweater party, followed by a Valentine’s Day dinner and quote-along of “When Harry Met Sally.”
The series offers movie fans a new way of experiencing films.
“Whether you grew up with these movies as a child or you’re seeing them for the first time, everyone has a place within this series,” Russell said. “We’re going the extra mile to make movies fun again.”
