OXFORD – Former Oxford attorneys Richard “Dickie” Scruggs and his son Zach have asked a U.S. District court to dismiss or halt a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against them.
The lawsuit, filed Jan. 12 by attorney W. Roberts Wilson Jr., claims the Scruggses and others cost him legal fees when they allegedly bribed Hinds Circuit Judge Bobby DeLaughter in 1994 lawsuit Wilson had before him against Scruggs.
The Scruggses, in prison for another judicial bribery case, want the federal court to dismiss or stop his federal suit until the Hinds County issues are decided or until DeLaughter’s case is resolved.
DeLaughter is set to go on trial in August, accused of allowing himself to be bribed and other charges. He insists he is innocent.
