UPDATE: The victims of Friday mornings semitrailer crash were Olida Acosta, 20, of Shannon, and Vianett Castillo, her 2-year-old daughter.
UPDATE: The victims were a 20-year-old Shannon woman and her 2-year old daughter according to Lee County Coroner Carolyn Green.
Green said they were waiting in the parking lot for a family member who had business at Acceptance Auto Insurance around 10:45 a.m. when a semi-truck rolled across South Gloster Street and into the parking lot, pushing their vehicle into the business.
The woman and her daughter were pronounced dead on the scene of the accident.
Two people are dead after the vehicle they were in was pushed by an 18-wheeler into Acceptance Auto Insurance Friday morning according to Tupelo Police Lt. Tim Clouse.
Around 10:45 a.m. the semi-trailer rolled down Mitchell Street, across South Gloster Street, hit another vehicle with two passengers and carried that vehicle into Acceptance Auto Insurance, according to witnesses on the scene. There was no driver in the semi-trailer.
The names of the deceased have not been released but building owner Jim Garrison said a client of Acceptance Auto Insurance and her daughter who were in the vehicle that was hit.
Emergency crews worked for more than an hour to lift the semi-trailer off of the vehicle and extricate the two victims.
Garrison said one employee of Acceptance, the company who leases the space from him, was in the building at the time of the accident but was uninjured.
“She said the truck came within six to eight feet from her desk,” Garrison said. “She didn’t know what happened and said she crawled out screaming.”
Traffic is still slowed on South Gloster Street.
Clouse said the crash is still under investigation and more will be released later.
