Shannon High seniors feel like family

TUPELO – Most Shannon High School Class of 2012 students will tell anyone their graduating class is like a family.
Salutatorian Kelli Spearman said she will take the closeness with her when she graduates.
“We’ve gotten to know each other, not so much just on a classroom level, but through projects we got to know about each others’ families and outside of school who we’re going to become,” Spearman said. “I will remember to be genuine in all that I do and that we can always achieve collectively, it doesn’t have to be a win-lose situation.”
Senior Zederick Nabors said the class is close because they’ve been together for a long time. He said their relationships allowed them to be leaders in the school.
“This class was close because most of us have been together since kindergarten and we all know each other and love each other,” Nabors said. “From this class, I will take the friendships and love that I shared through sports, classes, teachers and everything else.”
Marcus Thornton also will take their togetherness with him after graduation.
“We didn’t have too many problems or altercations and if we did, we tried our best to resolve them in an adult manner,” Thornton said.
Valedictorian Amber Frederick, in her speech, encouraged classmates to go forward and achieve but never forget the advice and helping hands they’ve been given along the way.
“Use everything you’ve ever learned and use it to your advantage, don’t just throw it all away,” she said.
Principal Robert Smith is retiring after 32 years and echoed the students feelings of closeness and leadership.
“They’ve been good role models, they’ve worked hard and I think they’re going to be a great graduating class and be a big credit to our community in the future,” Smith said.
He told the students, just before they tossed their caps, “I’m retiring, so I will be kind of graduating tonight also. I could not have picked a better class of young people to have as my last group of seniors.”
