TUPELO – A Shannon man pleaded guilty to culpable negligence manslaughter Friday in the Lee County Circuit Court.

Andrew Owens, 29, of Shannon, was sentenced to 20 years in Mississippi Department of Corrections custody, to serve 10 years and 10 years suspended, after entering a guilty plea to manslaughter charges.

He was accused in 2011 of depraved heart murder for the July 2 death of 2-year-old Kamri Stoby.

“We were prepared to go to trial Tuesday but a lengthy discussion with the victim’s family resulted in the guilty plea of manslaughter,” said a representative of the Lee County District Attorney’s Office.

Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson said the boy’s death happened while under the care of Owens, who he said knew the boy’s mother and was watching him while the mother was at work. Johnson said Stoby died from blunt-force trauma to his abdomen.
