Sharing the light

The Chickasaw County Relay for Life event is coming up quickly. The event will be held May 15 at Joe Brigance Park on Starkville Road in Houston beginning at 6 p.m. The evening is sure to be filled with color, sound, entertainment and fellowship, but the fun and festivities will only enhance the true reason for the gathering.
The American Cancer Society recruits teams for the event as a fund raising toll in the fight against cancer. Education, research, comfort and assistance are the main avenues of expenditure for funds raised at the event, but the end goal is finding a cure for and eliminating cancer.
In today’s society, it is difficult to find an individual or family who has not been touched in some way by this dreadful disease. The luminary portion of the evening at Relay for Life shows this fact in a bittersweet fashion.
During the evening, all actions will stop and candle-bags will be lit in honor of those who are battling cancer ad those who have succumbed. The lighted track will glow as the names on the bags are read aloud to remind all of the reason for the event. Each name will represent a mother, child, father, brother, sister, cousin, aunt, uncle or friend who is loved and is not missed or appreciated more.
The hope of the American Cancer Society is that the illumination of each bag will help take a step into the future when such ceremonies need not take place.
