Shelton the winner in Tupelo mayor's race

By NEMS Daily Journal

TUPELO — Attorney Jason Shelton won a decisive victory in the race for Tupelo mayor over City Councilman Fred Pitts to become the city’s first Democratic mayor in 28 years.
With all 13 precincts reporting, unofficial totals showed Shelton with 4,452 votes, or 59.6 percent, to Republican Pitts’ 3,017 votes, or 40.4 percent.
Shelton won 10 of 13 city precincts, including the lone precinct in Pitts’ Ward 2.
“The voters have spoken,” Pitts said, clearly emotional after speaking to the crowd. “I hope our mayor and city council will continue to work together.”
Pitts also said he would help in any way and would continue to be involved in the community.
Shelton told supporters at a victory celebration that he thought his “positive campaign” made the difference in the race.
“The best sleep I got in the campaign was the first night my opponent began to attack me,” he said. “That’s when I knew he thought I was the frontrunner.”
Here are reports from the 13 precincts in Tupelo read at polling places after they closed for voting. These votes are unofficial and do not include affidavits votes.
