Shivers enters coroner race in Oxford

By NEMS Daily Journal

OXFORD – Towing company owner Richard Shivers has filed papers to become the third qualifier for the office of Lafayette County coroner.
A part-time paramedic, Shivers is also a firefighter with the Lafayette County Volunteer Fire Department. He joins funeral director Rocky Kennedy, who was appointed as interim coroner Nov. 1, 2009, and former coroner Lonnie Weaver in the race.
The Nov. 2 special election for the post became necessary after Weaver, who had held the office for 20 years, resigned last fall in the midst of an investigation over $5,000 missing from the Mississippi Coroners and Medical Examiners Association, of which Weaver had been president.
He entered a guilty plea to a charge of embezzlement, but the plea was nonadjudicated, meaning Weaver can complete a year of probation and have the record expunged.
The winner of the Nov. 2, 2010, election wins the office for a year.
