UPDATE: Mississippi Highway Patrol Trooper Ray Hall confirmed to Daily Journal reporter Chris Kieffer the identity of the man shot this morning at a Tupelo apartment complex.
Gregory Martinez Hughes, 22, of Verona was shot and died, Hall said. Hughes was out on bond for an aggravated assault charge, which allegedly involved a shooting.
Hall said Hughes fired a shot at a Tupelo officer, who returned fire and fatally wounded him.
The name of the Tupelo Police officer was not released, and the officer is on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure until this investigation is complete.

UPDATE: The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation held a briefing just now at Barley Courts, NEMS Daily Journal reporter Chris Kieffer tells us.
Mississippi Highway Patrol Trooper Ray Hall said that after 9 a.m. Monday two Tupelo Police officers arrived on the scene because of a call that shots had been fired. He said it is not known at this time what happened, but a suspect, who was armed according to law enforcement officials, was fatally shot by an officer.
A woman identifying herself as the dead person’s great aunt Janice Banks of Guntown said his name is Gregory Martinez Hughes, 22. Officials have not confirmed the identity of the person who died.
The shooting is under investigation and the body will be sent for an autopsy.
There were around 100 people who gathered near the shooting scene to see what was going on in a parking lot across the street from the apartment complex.
Rev. Chris Traylor said a prayer with people at the scene and tried to keep people calm. People have cleared out of the area as of around 1 p.m.
“I’ve been trying to keep everything calm and in order,” Traylor said.
MBI will have another briefing at around 3:30 p.m. today.
The incident is under investigation.
UPDATE – Police officer involved in fatal shooting at Barley Courts apartment complex in Tupelo. Fatality was not the officer.
Tupelo Police Department responded to a 911 call at around 9 a.m. of shots fired at the apartment complex, according to Tupelo Police Department Detective Daniel McKinney. The person who died was male, according to officials. The officer involved has not been identified. The officer has not been identified.
After officers responded there was the fatal shooting. Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will handle the investigation because it is officer involved.
MBI on the way from Pontotoc and New Albany. Shooting was inside Tupelo city limits, near Verona line.
Tupelo Police Department is responding to reports of gunfire at Barley Courts Apartments in Tupelo near Verona. At least one person is reported to have been shot.
A Daily Journal reporter and photographer are on site and are reporting yellow crime scene tape has been placed around one of the apartment’s buildings.
Verona Police, Lee County Sheriff’s Department and at least nine TPD vehicles are on scene, along with at least one ambulance.
