Shooting leaves wife wounded, husband dead in Prentiss County

BOONEVILLE – Authorities aren’t certain why former Prentiss County School Superintendent Edward McCoy shot his wife before fatally shooting himself early Tuesday, but Prentiss County Sheriff Randy Tolar said there is no evidence that the violence was knowingly directed at her.
“There is no known history of domestic violence in the home or anything like that,” said Tolar. “We are still investigating what happened.”
Tolar said Prentiss County 911received a call at 1:18 a.m. Tuesday from a home in the Thasher Community.
When deputies arrived they found Barbara McCoy, 65, of 59 County 1040 suffering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder. She had left the location of the shooting and gone to her son’s home nearby to call 911.
Tolar said the investigation determined she had been shot by her husband, Edward McCoy, whose body was found in the bedroom on the floor with what appeared to be a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Barbara McCoy was taken to Magnolia Hospital in Corinth and was listed in stable but critical condition Tuesday afternoon.
Edward McCoy, brother of state Rep. Billy McCoy of Rienzi, served two terms as superintendent in the 1990s. He was 72.
