Sidney returns to Houston, won't go on Europe trip

Renardo Sidney has been striving to get himself in proper shape for the 2011-12 basketball season, and he believes some more one-on-one work this summer is the key to that.
Thus, the 6-foot-10 junior has decided not to accompany his Mississippi State teammates to Europe next month, where the team will play five exhibition games in three countries starting Aug. 7. Sidney has returned to Houston to work with former NBA star John Lucas.
Sidney worked with Lucas in May and June, and a team spokesman said it was Sidney’s decision to forego Europe for the extra work. MSU coach Rick Stansbury approved it.
Sidney, who was clearly out of shape last season, told reporters last week that he had dropped more than 20 pounds but still isn’t where he wants to be. Practicing with Lucas means he’s not subject to NCAA-mandated practice restrictions in Europe.
MSU began formal on-court preparations for the trip on Thursday.
