Sixth child born to Columbus woman in parking lot

COLUMBUS — A Columbus woman gave birth to her sixth child Tuesday — in a parking lot on her way to the hospital.

Barbara South tells The Commercial Dispatch that she pulled into a parking lot about 2 a.m. while on her way to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle. She gave birth to 6-pound, 3-ounce baby Brigita South.

South says she left for the hospital while her husband, Rick, kept their five children until a friend could take over.

When the contractions got intolerable, she pulled over and called 911, but the baby wouldn’t wait. She wrapped the baby in a towel and waited for help.

Columbus police responded to the scene and Rick South met them in the parking lot.

An ambulance took everyone to the hospital.
