SMITHVILLE – Two people were being treated Saturday at a burn center after a house fire in Smithville on Friday night.
Fire Chief Scott Morgan said the two were taken to area hospitals and then ultimately airlifted to the burn center in Augusta, Ga. He did not know what their conditions were Saturday night.
According to WTVA, the victims are 65-year-old Joyce Dill and her nephew, 32-year-old Derrick Riggan. They were in a home on 2nd Street in the Brasfield subdivision, and Riggan reportedly ran into the burning home to save Dill.
Morgan said the cause of the fire is unknown and it is being investigated by the state fire marshal’s office and Monroe Sheriff’s Department.
