Snowball Shoppe is a popular stop

TUPELO – On a steamy, hot day, a snow cone or ice cream seems to hit the right spot.
For more than 20 years, The Snowball Shoppe has been doing just that, with scores of flavors and toppings poured over and through shaved ice, helping to bring relief.
It’s no different this year, with owners Jennifer Plaxico and Amanda Anglin carrying on the tradition. The sisters bought the popular business on West Main Street last year, building on the popular flavors the previous owner sold. They’ve also added their own touch.
“Fun Frutti is one of the specials we created,” Anglin said. “It’s cake batter with cream and sprinkles. It’s really, really good.”
Also new is a snow shake.
“It’s like a milkshake, but with ice, flavoring and cream,” Plaxico said. “It’s been really popular.”
The Snowball Shoppe, a distinctive blue shack trimmed in green, has been an iconic fixture in Tupelo, with legions of kids, young and old, lining up over the years to enjoy the flavored iced shavings.
Cherry, grape, lime and banana are strictly old school; today, more exotic names like tutti frutti, honey yellow melon, blue bubble gum, dreamsicle and watermelon dominate the flavors.
Among the favorites are wedding cake and strawberry cheesecake.
New this year, and popular with kids, is Batman – black vanilla with lemon.
“We didn’t know if the kids would like it, but they do,” Anglin said.
The Snowball Shoppe typically opens in March and closes sometime in September, as fall sets in and business drops off with the temperature. After buying the store last year, Plaxico and Anglin got off to a later start than usual, opening in April. But this year, they were back on schedule.
Plaxico said when the previous owner offered to sell the business to them, it was an opportunity they couldn’t let slip by. And Anglin had some inside knowledge of the business, too – she had worked there for five years.
They take turns working shifts at the shop since it’s open every day of the week.
Customers come from across the region, and even a few from Memphis drop by.
“We’ve talked about expanding, adding another location somewhere, maybe going north a bit,” Plaxico said. “But we’ll see what happens.”
