LAUREL — A Jones County couple estimates their property had more than $300,000 of damage from a fire that destroyed one of their poultry houses this weekend.
The Laurel Leader-Call reports that Cindy and Stanley Bolivar were awakened before dawn Saturday by two hunters who saw the poultry house in flames and called 911 to report the blaze.
Volunteer fire and rescue units fought the fire, which was threatening two large diesel fuel tanks and another nearby poultry house.
Stanley Bolivar says both poultry houses held chickens that had picked up about a week ago, and both houses were in the process of being cleaned and readied for the next batch of birds. The Bolivars raise poultry for Sanderson Farms.
