TUPELO – This year’s lineup for the Tupelo Elvis Presley Festival is heavy on local talent, Mississippi connections and bands that can put on a show.
Bands such as Blackberry Smoke, the Spin Doctors, Jamie Davis amp& Soul Gravy and Busted Screen Door are on the roster to perform at the June 2-5 festival.
The Spin Doctors, who are headlining Saturday night, had its biggest hits with “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong” and “Two Princes” in the early ’90s.
Meridian native Ty Herndon is headlining Friday night, and he scored hits with songs like “What Mattered Most,” “It Must Be Love” and “Living in a Moment.”
“We try to have a Mississippi connection as much as we can, and we try to celebrate the connection with Elvis and the culture and heritage that he left behind,” said Greg Bost, who helped create the lineup for the festival.
“Old-school Southern rock” is how Bost describes Blackberry Smoke.
“They’re a great band to close the evening,” he said.
Local talent like Busted Screen Door and Ironwood Bluff are some of Tupelo’s most well-known and well-respected bands.
Okolona native Jordyn Mallory, who now lives in Nashville, is performing with her full band.
“We’re excited about Jordyn,” Bost said. “We think she’s gonna be big soon.”
Tupelo rock band Crashing Broadway has played at the Tupelo Elvis Presley Festival before, and the group’s impressive show is what earned the guys back this year.
“They really put on one heck of a show,” Bost said.
The Tupelo Elvis Festival also will include the Ultimate Elvis Presley Tribute Artist Preliminary Contest, Brandon Bennett and Kevin Mills concerts and a gospel concert.
