HOULKA – Wandaline Turner Houston, 83, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, at her home in Houlka.
She was born Sept. 14, 1929, in Houlka to John Rex Turner and Arness Surprise Aycock Turner. She was a retired office clerk for Fischer Lime and Cement Co. She was a member of Houlka United Methodist Church, where she was the church treasurer for 37 years and was a Sunday school teacher and lay minister. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Services will be Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, at 1 p.m. at Houlka United Methodist Church in Houlka with the Rev. Darrel Sanderson and the Rev. John Foster officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Houlka. Houston Funeral Home of Houston is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Hugh Edward Houston of Houlka; her sisters, Rita and Raymond Jemison of Ashland, Jackie and Bill Yager of Springfield, La., Jeanne and Jerry Elliott of Gretna, La., Sandra and Frank Appel of Slidell, La., Linda and Richard Guillot of Westwego, La.; her brother, J.R. and Joan Turner of Pearl River, La.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Pallbearers are Jimmy Jemison, Pat Houston, Terry Houston, Bradley McDonald, T.J. Brown and Douglas St. John.
Visitation is today, Sept. 26, 2012, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Houlka United Methodist Church.

Ruby Wells
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Ruby Lee Foster Martin Wells, 83, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, in Albuquerque, N.M., following a short illness. She was born Oct. 19, 1928, in Chickasaw County to Denver and Rosa Vance Foster. She graduated from Houston High School and worked for various manufacturing firms in the area. She married Aubrey Clyde Martin in 1956 and they had one son, Aubrey. After Clyde passed away, she returned to work and raised her son. She married Jordan Conrad “J.C.” Wells in 1978 and they subsequently moved to the Albuquerque, and Ruby remained in New Mexico after J.C.’s passing in 1997. She was a lifelong caregiver and “honorary” nurse to her two husbands, family and other loved ones.
Ruby dearly loved her family, friends and church. She was a member of the Church of God for her entire life. She enjoyed crafting, traveling and keeping in touch with her large family. She especially loved her garden and managed to transform her yard in the desert into a colorful oasis with many vegetables, flowers and numerous rose bushes that are the envy of the neighborhood. Ruby’s sweet smile and caring nature will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
A celebration of her life will be held at Thorn Church of God on Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, with Bro. Arnold Amason, and Bro. Wesley Britt officiating. A visitation will be held at Memorial Funeral Home in Houston on Thursday evening, Sept. 27, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. Also, a viewing will be held at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Poplar Springs Cemetery. Memorial Funeral Home of Houston is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Aubrey Paul Martin of Laguna Niguel, Calif., and Jordan C. “Jay” Wells of New Orleans, La.; two daughters, June Wells Kirby (Jimmy) of Houston and Debra Wells Sais (Barney) of Belen, N.M.; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Paul Foster of Muscle Shoals, Ala., Dan Foster (Sandra) of Gray, La., and David (Dorothy) Foster of West Point; two sisters, Vidia Moore of West Point and Lydia Johnson of Houston; one brother-in-law, Charles E. Martin of Fulton; one sister-in-law, Ila Mae Robinson of Houston; a host of nieces and nephews; dear friends, Levern and Bob Collins of Naugatuck, W.Va., Ira Silverstein of Laguna Niguel, Calif., and Victoria Nenner of San Diego, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; two brothers, Robert and Curtis Foster; and three sisters, Robbie F. Dendy, Maxine F. Smith and Addie Foster.

Laura Bishop
STARKVILLE – Laura Harpole Bishop died Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, at Whitfield Nursing Home in Corinth. She was born Nov. 18, 1920, to Edna Douglas and Squire Harpole in Oktibbeha County. She graduated as valedictorian of Maben High School Class of 1938 and also graduated from Wood Junior College in Mathiston. She was a homemaker, loved and revered by her family. She worked beside her husband in Bishop’s Grocery and Service Station for many years. She had many friends who visited the store and bought dress material from her. She was an excellent seamstress, and an avid reader and Bible scholar. She taught first grade at Maben School for a brief time. She was a lifelong member of Double Springs Methodist Church, serving in many capacities.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Double Springs Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Smith officiating. Welch Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include three daughters, Sue Ann (Danny) Dilworth of Biggersville; Nancy (Bill) Smith of Maumelle, Ark., and Laura (Allen) Clark of Stoneville; one sister, Doris (Kem) Bayburt of Troy, Mich.; two brothers-in-law, James White and Wyman (Fran) Bishop, both of Maben; grandchildren, Ladd Dilworth, Jack Dilworth, Laurie (Steve) Simons, Lisa (Wes) Sullivan, Ben (Amanda) Crowley, Kelly Smith, Annie Smith, Whit (Carolyn) Clark and Edwin Clark; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Rupert Bishop; parents; one sister, Mattie Vell White; one brother and sister-in-law, Carroll and Joy Harpole.

OXFORD – Patricia Ann Monteith Gibbs, 70, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, at her home in Oxford. Born in Boliver, Tenn., she was a member of First Baptist Church of Oxford. She enjoyed reading, playing bridge, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Oxford with Dr. Robert Allen and Dr. Eric Hankins officiating. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Waller Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Bernadine Schwenck
OKOLONA – Bernadine Marie Schwenck, 91, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, at Countrywood Plantation Manor in Mantachie after an extended illness. She was born June 9, 1921, in Des Moines, Iowa, to William Henry Eswine and Frances Zackman Eswine. She married her late husband, Otto Schwenck, and they made their home in Okolona, where she was a devoted homemaker, an excellent cook and gardener. A loving sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she enjoyed nature and bird watching. She attended Boone’s Chapel United Methodist Church.
A celebration of life service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Okolona Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with the Rev. H.B. Miller officiating. Entombment will follow in Hope Mausoleum in Lee Memorial Park.
Survivors include her sons, David Schwenck of Okolona and John Schwenck (Carol) of Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughter, Kathleen Kelly of Shannon; brother, Bob Eswine of Missouri; sisters, Hope Eswine of Dubuque, Iowa, and Joan Eswine of Omaha, Neb.; six grandchildren, Debbie Kelley, Ellen Gates, Jonathan Kelley, Robert Schwenck, Christina Schwenck and Stephen Schwenck; and two great-grandchildren, McKenzie Gates and Logan Gates.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a brother, Charles Eswine.

TISHOMINGO – Patricia A. Clingan Sparks, 60, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, at her residence. She was born Dec. 7, 1951, in Tishomingo County. She was a factory worker and a member of Highland Baptist Church.

She was a member of First Baptist Church and the church’s library staff. She was a charter member of DAR and a member of Calhoun County Extension Service.

BALDWYN – Alice O. Hutcheson, 87, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2012 at Baldwyn Nursing Facility. She retired from Lucky Star Manufacturing after 26 years. She enjoyed making dolls, quilting and gardening. She was a member of Camp Creek Baptist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Peggy Williams (Tom) and Pat Miller (Johnny), all of Guntown; one son, Larry Dean Hutcheson (Beneta) of Guntown; sisters, Christine Anderson, Olean Buse, Pauline McClure, Mae Watson and Opal Smith; grandchildren, Carolyn Rogers, Cathy Russell (Lane), Ted Williams (Donna), Wanda Booker (John), Gary Miller (Kelly) and Brian Hutcheson; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John Vuncannon and Dovie Walden Vuncannon; husband, Rob Hutcheson; a brother, R.S. Walden; a sister, Lucy Oswalt; and an infant son.
Her grandsons will serve as her pallbearers.
