JACKSON – Starkville captured its fifth state football championship – its first since 2001 – Saturday night with a 28-11 win against Pascagoula.
QB Gabe Myles scored two TDs, his second on a 1-yard sneak early in the fourth quarter to give his team a 17-point lead.
“It’s a wonderful way to end your senior year,” said Myles, a Mississippi State commit who accounted for 124 yards offense. “Last year our season was cut short. Our goal was to come back and win.”
The Yellow Jackets won, however, without teammate Devin Mitchell, who died from a gunshot wound in January.
“There was one star shining in the sky tonight,” a misty-eyed Starkville coach Jamie Mitchell said, looking up. “He’s been there with us all night long.”
