Mississippi Republican Party Chairman Joe Nosef congratulated former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum on his primary win Tuesday.

In a press release, Nosef called the candidate’s win “a hard-fought victory.”

“We were grateful that Senator Santorum, Governor Romney, and Speaker Gingrich each spent so much time campaigning in our state,” Nosef said. “This was a close race, however all Republicans can agree on one thing: we have to beat President Obama in November. Mississippi Republicans are looking forward to having a Republican nominee to support and help elect in November.”

The Associated Press declared Santorum the winner in Mississippi. With 92 percent of the precincts reporting, he had 33 percent of the vote compared to 31 percent for Newt Gingrich and 30 percent for Mitt Romney. Ron Paul came in a distant fourth with 4 percent

Santorum won despite Mississippi’s top Republican leadership supporting Romney.
