State hospital earns StormReady status

TUPELO – North Mississippi State Hospital was recognized Wednesday for its commitment to preparing for weather emergencies.

The 50-bed mental health facility in east Tupelo earned the StormReady Supporter designation for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It is the first in Lee County and within the Mississippi Department of Mental Health to earn the designation.

To earn the designation, which has to be renewed every three years, the state hospital had to meet the StormReady guidelines for hazardous weather operations and pass a site visit.

The hospital now will get to use a NOAA cellphone application that provides weather service alerts as soon as NOAA issues them.

How much money was spent to get to use the cellphone app ? As quick as weather alerts are issued through normal channels, I can’t see where this is much benefit for the expense in time, labor etc to get the designation.
