Participation in the Boys & Girls Club of North Mississippi is expanding.

Each day the clubs in Tupelo, New Albany and Ripley serve 500 children, said Ricky Hood, the executive director of the organization.

“The biggest thing we face is growth,” Hood said. “The longer the kids are here requires us to have a more qualified staff.”

With the addition of new clubs, resources can become spread thin, he said.

“We are doing an adequate job now, but with more funds we can do more,” Hood said.

To help meet the needs of the growing organization, which is working to add another club at the proposed Haven Acres Community Center in southwest Tupelo, Boys & Girls Club of North Mississippi will host its annual Steak & Steak dinner.

The event will be at 6:30 p.m., April 10 at the Tupelo Furniture Market on Coley Road.

Boys & Girls Club board member Joy Kellum said they are hosting the event for the third year.

“The Steak & Steak is our biggest fund-raiser,” Kellum said. Last year the event raised $60,000. This year the organization hopes to raise an estimated $75,000.

The meal, which will be prepared by Outback, will feature steaks. “It is a wonderful meal,” Kellum said.

Board member Lauren Patterson said the money at the event will be used to benefit programs at all of the centers.

Children who attend the clubs will be at the event to meet with residents. Children chosen as the Youth of the Year will be a guest speakers.

The keynote speaker will be Attorney General Mike Moore. Aubrey and Ruby Kathryn Patterson will be honored at the event for their contributions to the organization.

There will be a silent auction during the dinner. Kellum said more donated items for the auction are needed and can be made by calling the club’s office at 841-6504.
