Strickland’s attorneys seek delay in DUI-death lawsuit

By NEMS Daily Journal

ABERDEEN – Attorneys for DUI-death defendant John Howard Strickland Jr. ask for a delay in a civil lawsuit against him until his criminal case is resolved.
Strickland is due for trial July 24 in Oxford on two counts of drug impairment causing the deaths of siblings John William Wheat and Sarah Katherine Wheat on Oct. 27, 2012.
The fatal vehicular accident occurred on U.S. 278 in Lafayette County. His conviction is punishable by up to 25 years in prison.
Frances Z. Wheat, the siblings’ mother, sued Strickland and his parents in federal court in their wrongful death.
Wednesday, the defense asked Magistrate Judge David A. Sanders to delay or “stay” the proceedings until the criminal action is concluded.
Strickland was indicted last February and his trial date was set June 7 by Circuit Judge Andrew Howorth.
