BOONEVILLE – In a special executive session meeting Thursday evening the Prentiss County school board rescinded its action in firing the interim superintendent.
Billy D. Stroupe was appointed in March to serve as interim superintendent until a November special election, after the elected superintendent resigned.
However, during an executive session at the end of Monday’s regular school board meeting, three of the five school board members voted to remove Stroupe from the interim position.
Although the board has statutory authority to appoint an interim superintendent, there were serious legal questions as to whether the board had authority to dismiss him, said school board attorney Richard Bowen.
The school superintendent is an elected office, and the statute says the interim superintendent shall serve until a new superintendent is elected, Bowen said.
Stroupe has been on personal leave the past few days, Bowen said, but is expected to return to his office at any time.
