MOOREVILLE – Young Lee County musicians will answer a musical challenge today and Saturday.
Mooreville High School will host 132 seventh- through 10th-grade band students from Mooreville, Saltillo, Shannon and Baldwyn for the annual Lee County Honor Band. Their assignment will be to audition this afternoon and prepare four pieces for a concert for 2 p.m. Saturday. The concert is free and open to the public.
“We’ll start from scratch,” said Mooreville band director Walt Namie.
It’s the first year the annual event will feature two bands, and the first year Baldwyn students will be participating, Namie said.
Louisville High School band director Tim Avant and Eupora High School band director Chad Hawkins will be the guest conductors.
The program is aimed at young musicians who haven’t yet taken the opportunity to participate in state honor band competition.
“It’s another step forward,” Namie said. “It will make them better musicians, and the school bands will get better, too.”
