STURGIS, Miss. (AP) — Organizers of the Sturgis South Motorcycle Rally are hoping to raise enough money to hold the event on schedule for Oct. 7-9.
Rally board president Donny Hanson originally announced the event would be canceled. Then on Friday, he told the Commercial Dispatch (http://bit.ly/nQMUm4 ) that he hopes local business will help generate $40,000 of the estimated $80,000 needed to cover entertainment fees by the end of the month.
The rally, an Oktibbeha County staple for the last 14 years, has been a dependable source of revenue for local hotels and restaurants in Starkville, Louisville and Ackerman.
Hanson says the event lost $28,000 last year.
Hanson says Sturgis South organizers have a 30-day window prior to the event to cancel concert contracts without financial penalty.
