TUPELO – Pete Malone, the Tupelo-based Subway franchisee, is opening lucky store number 13 soon in east Tupelo.

Malone bought the lot where Trulove’s Auto Center originally stood on East Main Street, adjacent to Anytime Fitness. While Trulove’s has a new location farther east on the road, Malone is converting its old space into a 6,200-square-foot retail center.

On the east side of the all-brick-and-glass building will be a 2,300-square-foot Subway restaurant with a drive-thru.

“It’s not the first Subway we have with a drive-thru, but it’ll be the first in Tupelo,” said Malone, who owns 12 Subway stores in Northeast Mississippi.

Subway has a popularbreakfast menu that sells well, and Malone said the drive-thru is ideal for customers buying from it.

Sharing room in the building will be three 1,300-square-foot spaces for retailers Malone hopes to attract.

“We’re looking to open by May,” he said.

Including the land purchase and construction Malone said he’s spending $600,000 to $700,000 on the project, a significant private-sector investment.

Malone said his ties to Subway made it possible, having been with the company more than 30 years.

“Subway has staying power,” he said.

Indeed, the company’s growth has been explosive. Since its founding in 1965, it has become the world’s largest sandwich chain, with more than 37,000 locations.
