HOUSTON – A man arrested and held at the Chickasaw County jail in Houston apparently tried to take his own life.
Monday, he was at Northeast Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
John Thomas, 26, was arrested on a domestic violence charge by Houston police on Dec. 2 and was detained at the county jail where he reportedly attempted to hang himself with a bed sheet later that night.
A guard making rounds found Thomas unresponsive, but with a pulse. He was taken to Trace Regional Hospital in Houston and later moved to NMMC.
“As of this morning (Monday), he was still alive,” said Chief Deputy Jim Meyers.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations will conduct the investigation into the matter.
“Anytime someone in jail tries to hurt himself or commit suicide, the Bureau investigates it,” Meyers said.
