Suspected armed robber arrested in Verona

VERONA – A man accused of assaulting a Verona store clerk and robbing the business is in custody.
Verona Police Chief Leo Mask said the suspect, whose name is not being released, was arrested in Barley Court apartments shortly after the robbery that happened about 11:30 a.m. at the Super C Tobacco store.
The clerk was beaten with a hammer and taken to the North Mississippi Medical Center. Her condition is unknown.
The clerk told investigators a man came in asking if they sold pre-paid phone cards and then left. He returned a short time later and asked to buy a phone card. The clerk says when she looked down to get one he then hit her with a hammer.
The clerk says the man then took the money out of the register and took her personal money then took her to a back room and tied her to a chair with duct tape.
