Suspicious person prompts school lockdown

TUPELO – Three Tupelo Schools were placed on partial lockdown on Wednesday morning after students reported being approached by a suspicious individual on their way to school.
Pierce Street Elementary, Tupelo Middle School and the Filmore Center were placed on partial lockdown from 7:55 a.m. to 8:55 a.m. as a precautionary measure. The three schools are all near each other.
During that time, Tupelo Police and TPSD security patrolled those campuses and the surrounding areas and found them to be safe, allowing the lockdown to be lifted.
A partial lockdown requires all outside doors to be locked and school employees to have a heightened awareness for suspicious activity on and around campuses. Classes remained on schedule.
A press release sent by the school district commended the students for alerting school officials of a possible danger in the area.
