Swanson new state Methodist bishop

Mississippi’s United Methodists will have a new bishop effective Sept. 1. Bishop James Swanson Sr. will relocate to the Mississippi Conference from the Holston Conference based in Alcoa, Tenn.
Swanson is the first African-American bishop in the Mississippi conference. He succeeds Bishop Hope Morgan Ward, who was reassigned to a position in Raleigh, N.C.
The announcement of the appointment was made at the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference held at Lake Junalusca, N.C.
