CORINTH – A local women’s civic group, looking for new ways to energize fundraising for college scholarships, is hosting a tailgating party at the E.S. Bishop Park on Saturday.
Whatever your college, university, high school or professional team, Taurus Club spokeswoman Lila Wade said every team’s jersey, mascot or memorabilia is welcome at this event to kick off the 2010 football season.
“There’s no fee to set up and anyone can start setting up as early as they like,” Wade said. “It’s first-come, first-choice on location, except for a few reserved spots.”
Events begin at 2 p.m. at the park on Johns Street, including music throughout the day, a silent auction and political speakings.
“There will be donation boxes for anyone who wants to contribute that day, but it’s not a requirement,” Wade said. “We’ve put together a souvenir booklet to raise funds, and the money will go to the UNCF – United Negro College Fund – and to local scholarships.”
Mississippi State University and the University of Mississippi, as well as Mississippi Valley State University, University of Tennessee-Martin, Knoxville College, University of Memphis and Rust College will be represented.
The federated women’s club has traditionally held a Goodwill Ball as its major scholarship fundraiser, but wanted to shake things up a bit to try to generate wider interest and support.
“These scholarships are important to our young people, and we want to remind everyone that this is a good way to show their support,” she said.
