Tax panel delays vote on Tupelo Sunday alcohol sales

TUPELO – State officials today are expected to take up Tupelo’s petition to begin legal Sunday sales of on-premises alcohol.
Last month, the state Tax Commission approved Tupelo’s petition but did not issue a final order on the decision. The matter was scheduled for discussion Tuesday but was delayed by an agenda change for the state Division of Alcohol Beverage Control’s monthly meeting.
Tupelo Mayor Jack Reed Jr. said Reed indicated there was no apparent problem with the petition, which was approved by the Tupelo City Council in late 2009.
The approval would legalize on-premises liquor and wine sales for restaurants, clubs and caterers from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays.
Beer and light wine sales were earlier approved for the same Sunday hours.
