TCU stifles Ole Miss

By The Associated Press

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — TCU starter Brandon Finnegan stifled Ole Miss on Sunday night in the Horned Frogs’ 5-2 victory.

With the win TCU forced a game Monday night to decide which program will advance to a super regional.

“TCU just played better than we did tonight,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “When you get to this point of the season, you aren’t going to sneak through. Brandon Finnegan was tremendous for them tonight and we couldn’t catch up to his fastball. It was a gutsy performance from R.J. (Hively) tonight, but we have to help him more than we did.”

Finnegan (4-4) allowed six hits and two earned runs while striking out seven and walking three over 7 1/3 innings. TCU grabbed a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on Derek Odell’s two-run home run into the right-field bullpen, and then added to its lead with single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

The second-seeded Horned Frogs (39-20) have won three consecutive games after dropping their regional opener against the third-seeded Rebesl (37-25). Ole Miss suffered its first loss in three games in the regional.

TCU had eliminated top-seeded Texas A&M 10-2 earlier Sunday for the right to take on Ole Miss as the last two teams standing in College Station.

Single game for regional championship Monday at 6:35 p.m. in College Station between TCU and Ole Miss.
