COLUMBUS — A man who authorities say shot a mail carrier will face aggravated assault and armed robbery charges.
Lowndes County sheriff’s deputies arrested 17-year-old Arthur Lee “Slim” Whitfield Friday, reports The Commercial Dispatch.
Authorities expect to formally charge Whitfield Monday. He’s accused of shooting mail carrier Doug Aldridge Thursday while Aldridge was delivering mail at an apartment complex just outside Columbus.
Whitfield was arrested Friday in an apartment at the complex, and investigators recovered a gun there.
Aldridge was shot once under the left armpit and remained hospitalized Friday.
Because Aldridge is a federal employee, the postal service joined the investigation. Postal Inspector Susan Link said postal workers rarely carry cash and added that shooting a postal worker carries additional federal charges.
