Tennessee woman arrested in Ecru slaying

ECRU – The Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the death of an Ecru man who was shot to death Wednesday night.

Pontotoc County Investigator Kevin Rodgers said Christine D. Gunter, 36, 7635 State Route 223, Henderson, Tenn., has been arrested and charged with murder in the case.

Gunter made her initial appearance before a judge Monday and bail was set at $100,000. Gunter was still being held in the Pontotoc County Jail late Thursday afternoon.

Gunter is accused of shooting Charles L. Gardner, 61, 1455 Q.T. Todd Road, Ecru. Pontotoc County Coroner Barry Moorman said the results of an autopsy conducted at Grenada Lake Medical Center Thursday found that Gardner was killed by a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Rodgers said Gunter is known to have been living with Gardner and that she was Gardner’s girlfriend.

The shooting was reported to Pontotoc County E911 officials at about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday. Rodgers said a rifle believed to be the murder weapon has been recovered and has been shown to have one shot fired. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is ongoing, he said.
