HATTIESBURG — Shelby Thames, former University of Southern Mississippi president and polymer science professor, has returned to the school as “emeritus professor.”
The Hattiesburg American reports (http://hatne.ws/SDPATA ) that the honorary title was approved by the state College Board. Emeritus status recognizes long service of distinction.
Thames retired from USM in July, after four decades at the university, including five as president.
He began work on Oct. 1 on a multi-year $3 million Department of Defense grant that will pay his salary.
Thames resigned as president in 2007 and returned to his position within the university as a distinguished research professor — a post he held when he retired.
