CANTON — Democrat Bennie Thompson is out campaigning in Mississippi’s 2nd Congressional District, saying he’s not taking for granted that he’ll be re-elected next Tuesday.
Still, with 17 years’ experience on Capitol Hill, Thompson holds a substantial advantage in campaign cash and name recognition over his Republican challenger, Bill Marcy.
Thompson has been on Capitol Hill since 1993, representing a district that stretches through the Mississippi Delta and encompasses most of the capital city of Jackson.
It’s one of the poorest areas in the nation, and Marcy says Thompson has done too little to improve people’s job prospects.
Thompson chairs the House Homeland Security Committee and says he has brought millions of federal dollars into the district, for everything from university programs to community health centers.
