VERONA – Three Lee County Children remain in Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis after the ATV they were riding pulled in front of a truck near the South Lee Industrial Park Saturday.
The 13-year-old Nettleton resident, 10-year-old Shannon resident and two-year-old Plantersville resident were riding a 1998 Honda Fourtrax ATV along with a nine-year-old Amory resident who has since been released from North Mississippi Medical Center.
Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson said the two-year-old was in critical condition as of Monday night.
State law requires that an ATV driver on a public road must has a valid driver’s license or a certificate of graduation from a recognized ATV safety course.
It also says all ATV passengers under 16 years of age must wear a helmet.
None of the children were wearing helmets at the time of the accident.
He also said the 13-year-old driver did not have a safety course certificate.
Johnson said state law says nothing about driving an ATV on a public street. The law also doesn’t mention passengers, though the safety course advises against having passengers on an ATV.
