TUPELO – Tupelo High School show choir director Danielle Frerer called the school’s principal on the way home from Fame Branson’s Show Choir Competition with an unusual request.
“I said, ‘I don’t know if we have a trophy case big enough. You might want to clear something out,’” she said with a laugh. “The trophy is huge.”
The THS all-girl show choir team, Synergy, took home the Unisex Grand Champion Title at the show choir competition, earning it a trophy that’s almost as tall as Synergy members as well as a spot in the final round of competition in Chicago.
Frerer said she believes this is a first for THS.
“Mixed group (THS show choirs) have gone to Fame, but nobody has won. This is a first,” she said. “I could not be more proud. I told these girls early on, ‘I think we have something special here.’ I’m proud of the work they’ve done.”
The 39-member group, Synergy, was born out of the two previous THS show choirs, Sound Wave and Wave Connection. This is Synergy’s first year.
Some members of Synergy said it’s hard to believe they won. “We were all standing there, shaking and holding hands, and when they said the first ‘T-U-P’ of Tupelo, we all busted out screaming,” said freshman Michaela Bryan.
“It was like in a movie,” said junior Reagan Ray.
Synergy will travel to Chicago for the final round in late April. It’ll cost $17,000 to send the team to finals, so they’ll begin fundraising soon. Folks can donate to the team by calling the high school and asking for Frerer or by making a tax-deductible donation through CREATE.
Go to createfoundation.com, click on “make a donation” and then indicate “THS Showchoir Fund.”
Another way is to make checks payable to CREATE, P.O. Box, 1053, Attention Beverly Williams, Tupelo, MS 38802. Specify “THS Show choir Fund” in the memo.
