WALNUT – A reported shooting and hostage situation Tuesday landed a Tippah County man in jail Wednesday.

Walnut police and the Tippah County sheriff’s department responded to a dispute between two neighbors about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Tippah County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Chris McCalister said they believe shots were fired between the two, and John Roberts, 36, of Walnut, allegedly peppered his neighbor’s arm with bird shot. The other neighbor was not charged or seriously injured.

Roberts then allegedly barricaded himself in his house with his girlfriend and two children, ages 11 and 13.

“He refused to talk to us, so we didn’t know the situation,” McCalister said. Highway Patrol and SWAT were called to assist. Shortly after midnight, Roberts came out of the house and was taken into custody.

Roberts was charged with attempted aggravated assault and was in the Tippah County Jail awaiting arraignment Wednesday.
