TIPPAH COUNTY MAN DIES IN ONE-VEHICLE ACCIDENT

ASHLAND – A Tippah County man died Tuesday night after a one-vehicle accident in which he lost control of his vehicle and drove across a road into a ditch.

Herman Cornelius 68, Ripley, was pronounced dead at Holly Springs Memorial Hospital, said Benton County Medical Examiner Bob Riles.

The accident occurred about 9 p.m. on state Highway 5 near the Maxwell Road intersection in Benton County.

Cornelius was traveling along Maxwell Road in a 1978 GMC pickup when he drove through a stop sign and kept going until he hit the side of a ditch’s embankment.

The impact forced Cornelius under the truck’s steering wheel, where he was pinned, Riles said.

Emergency personnel worked for more than an hour to free Cornelius from the wreckage. The jaws of life were used to free him, and he was airlifted to the hospital.
