RIPLEY – Tippah County will pay $50,000 of a Memphis hospital bill that originally was about $650,000, for treatment of a prison worker injured while working on a county job.
The county filed a claim with the state workers’ compensation carrier, which denied responsibility, an issue the county fought in court for a couple of years.
At the same time the county negotiated with Regional Medical Center
in Memphis and initially paid $50,000 of the medical charges. The county agreed that if it lost its appeal in court, it would pay
an additional $50,000 to close out the claim. The county has now lost its final appeal and is responsible for the remaining $50,000 of charges.
