Tossed tires a big issue in Washington County

GREENVILLE — Between Monday and Wednesday, a tractor-trailer load of discarded tires has been collected in Washington County.

And that makes some 1,492 tires picked up this year.

Don Cannon, Washington County receiving clerk, tells the Delta Democrat Times the tires can be a nuisance and unsightly and retrieving them is costly for the county. Cannon said the county has spent 65 days of manpower collecting tires.

The United States Department of Agriculture says more than 265 million tires are thrown out each year in the United States. The USDA said some are recycled, but most are improperly discarded.
