TUPELO – Parents and community members wishing to volunteer in Tupelo Public Schools can complete their mandatory background check on Saturday.
School district employees will be available to take fingerprints for those background checks from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday at the Fillmore Center, located at 903 Fillmore Drive. Fingerprinting will also be done from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The school district requires background checks for volunteers who could potentially be alone with a student, and official volunteers and chaperones for field trips.
Examples of those who won’t need background checks are people who bring birthday cakes to their child’s class, those who help build sets for drama productions and those who volunteer at fall festivals or work at concession stands.
Those who completed the fingerprinting background check during the 2010-11 school year will not need to repeat the process.
“Making sure that school is a safe place for our students is the reason for requiring volunteers to have TPSD background checks,” said Deputy Superintendent Diana Ezell. “We appreciate our volunteers and the role they play in our children’s education.”
Participants must bring two forms of identification and pay a $35 processing fee. Normal hours for the background checks are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Fillmore Center. They can also be scheduled by appointment.
TO COMPLETE a background check, volunteers must:
• Fill out “GBAC-EXHIBIT Authorization for Criminal Background
Check.” It can be found on the school website or picked up at
school offices or at the Fillmore Center.
• Present social security card and driver’s license or state-issued
• Pay the $35 fee.
A district employee will then complete the fingerprinting and
send off the results. Processing usually takes four to six
