TPSD opinion survey deadline extended

TUPELO – A grassroots organization formed to support Tupelo schools has received more than 1,000 survey responses within its first week and will continue to accept surveys until April 1.
Leaders Engaged for the Advancement of Public Schools Inc., or LEAPS, was organized by a group of residents who wanted to serve as advocates for teachers, parents, students and residents in the district. The nonprofit group announced its formation on March 10.
LEAPS President Rob Hudson said that the group wanted to gather data about Tupelo Schools and the public’s perception of them, analyze that data and then serve as a bridge between the community and the schools.
One avenue for gathering that data was a survey that LEAPS posted at www.surveymonkey.com/TupeloSchools. The initial plan was to collect responses for two weeks, but the organization announced in Friday’s press release that it would extend that deadline.
“We have received an overwhelming response so far,” Hudson said in the press release. “We have gathered over a thousand surveys within a week. We are working to make sure that everyone who wants to participate in the survey has the chance to do so.”
Paper copies of the survey will be available at Tupelo City Hall, Tupelo Housing Authority, Northside Boys & Girls Club and Haven Acres Boys & Girls Club.
Those copies can be returned to all of those locations, except City Hall. They can also be mailed to Tupelo LEAPS Inc., 144 S. Thomas St., Suite 208, Tupelo, MS 38801.
The 19-question survey includes questions about the Apple laptop initiative, discipline and safe environments and the quality of the district’s education, among others.
“We want to do everything possible to make sure that the survey response is a good representation of our community,” LEAPS board member Lisa Hawkins said in a press release.
