Tractor Trailer hauling ferrous chloride in accident on Highway 82

A one vehicle crash occurred around 8:30 a.m. Saturday on US Highway 82 in Lowndes County, at the Airport Exit.

The crash has closed the eastbound on ramp from MS highway 791 onto US 82 eastbound. The highway 82 corridor was not directly affected. The tractor trailer was a tanker truck hauling ferrous chloride.

The tractor trailer was traveling north on MS Highway 791 and was attempting to turn east on to the US highway 82 on-ramp. The truck crashed as it was attempting to turn. The truck and trailer traveled off the roadway and over turned.

The driver is Travoris Ashford, 30 years old from Columbus. The truck is owned by B & R Transportation of Angola, Indiana. The driver suffered minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to BMH in Columbus.

The Haz-Mat team from the Columbus Fire Department was on the scene and the MDEQ was also there. The ferrous chloride is a hazardous chemical, but there is no immediate threat to motorist, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol. The tanker is intact and there is no evidence of any spillage of the chemical.

Traffic has returned to normal in the area.

The crash is still under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol.
